Into the Jaws of the Horizon

In Bisayan myth there exist 7 layers of the universe; the underworld, the earth and the four layers of the skyworld. Considered as an ancestral and grandfather spirit, the crocodile is both the guardian of the underworld and the living reincarnation of the dead, capable of traversing multiple layers of the universe through the riverbed. Their presence underground and through the layered universe is often believed to be the cause of natural phenomena. Their ancient bodies and glistening teeth; a steward for great change.

The internet is made up of a network of interconnected physical servers that exist across the world. Conceiving of this digital environment as an additional layer of the universe, this web series locates a data center within seven cities of the world with the highest population of Overseas Filipino Workers, making these cities some of the largest locations of Filipino diaspora. A website is launched at each data center, connecting these physically distant and collective locations in an ephemeral layer.

Within each website, awaiting like a promise, the crocodile resides. Deep within the waters of the datastream, amongst the bytes and the files, they feel with their jaws and their teeth. They feel the loops of devaluation, the tides of colonization, that paved the way for a labor brokerage economy that globally positioned workers in alignment to the needs and the demands of empire.

And yet, the crocodile whispers and acknowledges, “Here is where I have built a home, and here is where I will also sink my teeth.”
